Cellulite is that 'orange peel' look that is apparent on the legs, thighs and upper arms of most women as they age. Caused by the storage of fat cells in the subcutaneous tissue and the subsequent pushing of fat against the skin from microcirculatory changes, which cause an increase in fluid retention. Alternative cellulite treatments offer women non-invasive options outside of the doctor's office and hospital.

If you suffer from cellulite then you are not alone. As many as 85%+ of women worldwide are afflicted, and even some men. From the teenage years onward (but particularly after the age of 35) cellulite is common. It often affects the self-esteem and self worth of the sufferer, and dictates what they wear, as they often choose to cover up the cellulite areas.

Ionithermie cellulite reduction treatment is one treatment that many people have found success with. This treatment originates from France and has been proven to reduce cellulite, improve skin elasticity and increase muscle tone. It involves various levels of electrical stimulation using a hand held device.

Synergie cellulite treatment is a unique, non invasive procedure that involves vacuum massage technology to smooth and tighten the skin. Treatments are 30 minute sessions every three days for about three months. A study in 1998 concluded that 91% of women saw a significant improvement in their cellulite.

There are also at home alternative cellulite treatments and techniques. These techniques are not new age or require the use of a doctor's prescription. Herbs used in cooking are thought to have antioxidant qualities to reduce cellulite such as Cayenne pepper, juniper berries, black pepper extract, ginger, grape seed, garlic, peppermint tea.

Body brushing is another way that you can treat your cellulite at home. Dry body brushing stimulates the lymphatic system and combined with drinking lots of water and eating healthily can be very effective in eliminating cellulite. Use a brush with natural bristles and brush the affected areas before showering to improve circulation.

Losing weight can help to improve the appearance of cellulite as it reduces the fat cells underneath the skin. This will not always help as thin people get cellulite too, but if you are suffering from weight problems then weight loss should help. Cutting out junk food and drinking more water should not only help you to lose weight, but should help you to achieve smoother, healthier looking skin as well.

Unfortunately are no easy ways to get rid of cellulite. Most are time consuming and don't come cheap either. Often the best treatment for cellulite is improving your diet, getting regular exercise, and using a technique such as dry body brushing or massage.
