We have all heard or read about someone who lost everything to a con artist. How can we avoid the same fate? Do you know how to protect yourself against a unscrupulous person who promises a fantastic home business opportunity, how to tell a real venture from a fake? All you need to do is remember some basic tips.

First, find out how they learned your name and address? If you signed up for reputable home business mailing lists, they may be legit. If you didn't, you should be wary. Anyone who has a legitimate offer will not hide their identity or conceal how they obtained information about you.

Next: does the promised reward sound too good to be true? "Make Millions of Dollars in an Hour a Day!" Sadly, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. A legitimate home based business will never bring you these kinds of rewards, unfortunately. Besides, if making millions of dollars was this easy, wouldn't more people be millionaires?

Now, if a program has passed these two tests, it may be safe to inquire further, but you should still go slowly. What will it take to get started in this business? If you have to pay them money before you get more information, you should be suspicious. If they were reputable, and the scheme actually worked, there would be no harm in explaining the basic program to you before you signed on. There would still be so much to do and learn.

Finally, even legitimate home businesses often require a significant investment at the beginning. Can you afford to spend money on equipment and materials that may not bring you any returns for a considerable amount of time.

You can avoid being scammed if you do your research and give any business opportunity a lot of thought before moving forward. The biggest mistake you can make is to move too quickly, tempted by the promise of big payoffs. Con artists may seem like nice, trustworthy people, but that is the pointit only works if the mark believes the con artist is honest.

It may seem cynical to question everyone and very opportunity. But you have worked hard for everything you have, and you must protect against losing it. Take your time, do your homework, and check out all the options. It's not cynicism, just good common sense.

If you are strict with yourself and always approach any business proposition with a businesslike perspective, and do not let your emotions come into play, you can go a long way towards avoiding being scammed. Don't let scammers get their hands on your cash!
