It would be perfect if we could just stay healthy, never get sick and have no need to see a doctor or take medications ever. But sometimes, it is when people are healthy that they could feel some sort of invincibility towards illness and totally disregard even the most basic rules regarding sex. Thus, this seemingly slight oversight can cause damage to our health.

Molluscum Contagiosum is a viral infection affecting the skin, sometimes of the mucous membrane, and as its Latin name connotes, is very contagious. It only infects human beings and most often just benign. The infection is prevalent among children, sexually active individuals and people with low immunity.

It is caused by a molluscipox virus. This stereotype of virus is different from the others in its family by the fact that it causes spontaneous lesions; they look like small tumors of the skin rather than papules. The eruption takes place at the skin level as well as at the mucous level. It was first described by Bateman at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The manifestations at the skin level of this infection are various.

It is presented as small prominences of different sizes. They can have the dimensions of a top of a pin up to the size of a pepper seed. The shape of the lump can be round or hemispherical. The color of the lumps is the same color as the skin. When touched, they feel relatively hard. The number of the lesions caused by exposure to the virus varies from one to dozens. If they are pressed, they eliminate a semi-liquid paste somewhat whitish.

Pressing the bumps is not advisable because it will cause the infection to spread to the nearby areas of the skin. This becomes a common affliction of kids when they often use public swimming pools and borrow each others towels. Kids with low level of immunity are also prone to the illness. Regardless of this illness being self-limited, the indications should not be disregarded and left without treatment.

Individuals who are immune-depressed will not be able to deal with the infection easily because as the lumps burst, the ensuing substance from the lesions brings with it the virus which could easily infect other parts of the skin. For this reason, kindergarten schools or days care centres do not accept children who have wounds caused by this virus.

There are several ways to treat this affection. It can be treated with special medication, or it can be surgically removed. Not being a serious disease, it can go away by itself in a few months, but it can also last up to several years, depending on the immune system of the contaminated individual.

As much as possible do not use other people's towel, and if you have to, make sure that its owner is not infected with lesions caused by the virus. Same care should be taken before using a pool, discreetly inspect the location and condition of the pool. One cannot be too careful because as you well know, this disease can be contracted through direct contact. Following the fundamental rules of cleanliness and being conscious of the condition of the places you visit and things you use and even the physical condition of your sex partner, as regards to such illness, can avert this disease from happening to you.
