Anyone who says that moss will not damage your roof does not know what he is talking about. Moss is alive and like all living organisms it needs to eat. The moss is feeding on your roofing material and that is a fact. If you need proof just pull some off and look at the hole below, where it has been feeding. Removing it is a very simple process that you can do yourself with a few simple tools and a good moss cleaning product.
What you do not want to use to clean the moss from your roof with is TSP, bleach or chlorine based products these will kill moss but also damage your home. Those products are not designed to stick to pitched roofs; they clean unevenly and usually leave stains on the roof shingles or tile. Along with staining your roof, these products contain strong chemicals that severely dry out your roofing material, causing cracking and making your roofing material susceptible to wind damage. These types of hazardous products may also kill any plant, shrub or section of lawn as it runs off of the roof. There are products designed specially to clean moss from roofs, a good product will be designed to stick to even the steepest pitched roof while attacking the roots of the moss. A good roof washing product should be environmentally safe so that it will not harm your yard, it should also be a non-staining product.
The correct method of removal is to use a "garden style" pump sprayer to apply the roof moss cleaner directly to the roof moss, after waiting 10-15 minutes but not letting the moss dry out again, simply brush the roof moss off of your roof while the roots are released due to the reaction of the cleaning agent. A deck brush with medium bristles is all that you will need to remove the moss. The removal of moss dry or with "make shift" cleaners will only result in scraping the top off of the moss, the roots will remain behind and soon bloom again. Remove small sections at a time, keep the area moist that you are working on and rinse completely when finished with water.
There are only two ways that I would recommend to keep your roof clean. The first is quite simple; in late spring and late fall apply a coat of roof cleaner to your roof. This will kill any spore that may have started to grow again and the rain will rinse it off. The alternative is more complex but does not require periodic maintenance. Zinc is available in rolls that you can adhere to the ridge of your roof, as it rains the zinc releases moss and algae killing elements. Proof of the effectiveness of this method can be seen on your own roof, just look under any metal object and you will notice "clean roof".
Once the roof has been cleaned, a little yearly maintenance or some zinc along the ridge and the roof will look and continue to look new again.
