Why is writer's block such a problem and what is it exactly?
I need to meet a deadline and I sit down and have nothing, I mean nothing to write down!
Is this your problem? "Not mine", you say, but come on... we all have had the same experience of not being able to think of what to say or write. It's that dreaded experience of having....
WRITER'S BLOCK!!!
Hmmmm! I just stare with a blank stare at that white space and wish I could put something down. The more I think about it the stronger the writer's block becomes.
Writer's block is that blank numb stare at an empty page. You want to write something and you have some thoughts, but you can't transfer it from your head to that page. There's nothing... and you just waste your time getting nowhere.
You break into a cold sweat as you try to force something out. The harder you try, the worse it gets. You scream at the top of your lungs scaring everybody in your house, but it doesn't make anything start working for you.
So what brings on writer's block?
One reason could be fear. You're so stressed when it comes to writing, that you just turn off. Maybe you think you don't have anything worth putting down on paper or you could just fear having writer's block itself.
Writer's block can happen to anyone in any situation. You may think you have to have a masterpiece or you will get picked apart by all the critics out there waiting to pounce on your next article.
Here are some great tips you can put into use right now to blast away writer's block forever.
You may not believe it but WRITER'S BLOCK CAN BE OVERCOME.
Please, remain seated.
[1] Know your topic. Give yourself the preparation and confidence through thorough research. If you know your topic well, the information and vocabulary, you'll most likely have a lot to write about.
[2] Forget about being perfect. Just sit down and write whatever comes to mind. Really! Don't stop to think if it makes sense or not. Write down every thought that comes to mind in any order. Just get it out of your head and on to your paper. You don't have to care about your drafts. That's what they are for, the journey to the final piece. You'll be surprised at the thoughts that come out, because you didn't judge it as being worthy or not worthy to be written down.
[3] Don't edit while you are writing. This is related to the previous tip. Do not think about any grammar, sentence structure, spelling, etc. Write it all down anyway it comes out. Thinking about how you are going to write it is going to prevent the thoughts from flowing. You will be able to go back and make it readable later on. You get a good flow of thoughts going and you'll be surprised at how much you have to say about a subject. Just write like you are having a casual talk with a friend.
[4] Forget about the first sentence. Get rid of writer's block by writing down what comes to mind in any order. You don't have to always start with the beginning. Start at the end if that's all you can think of in your writing. As you get something started, you will activate your mind in a way and the other parts of your article will surface.
[5] Act as if. You act like you are a great writer that always has something great to say, you will have something to say. There is real power in acting like what you want to be. You have the talent in you and as you act confident, you will be able to write.
[6] Remember what the Nike slogan says, "Just do it!" Don't hold off any longer. Get yourself going. The longer you procrastinate, the longer you'll have to deal with writer's block. Get all your notes together and keep them close. Also remember most thoughts aren't original. Know what other people have said about your topic and use their thoughts to get your thoughts going. It's good not to copy what people say word for word, but put thoughts into your own words and add to them with your own experiences and stories. Include your own style and you have your own work. Don't try to re-invent the wheel every time you sit down to write.
In conclusion, you can implement these tips to get over writer's block. You might not think you have the greatest work around but that's okay. If you can teach, inspire and help somebody by what you convey on paper, you are a good writer. And the great thing is that the more you write the better you become. So get going okay.
